Since the 90's Hughes as drawn on his studies of 14th and 16th century painting, and Medieval Church wall paintings in an attempt to create his 'today'.
The latest paintings based on the quotations from Acts and Corinthians and on Roger Caillois's quote from his writings - Au coeur du fantastique-
'that art has no right to venture here at all'
and influenced by those strange depictions of ecorches and psuedo-cadavers, the incredible anatomical wax effigies of the Museu 'La Specola' in Florence.

Transcribed the paintings are about symbolic fantasies where resemblance is exchanged for dissemblance, appearance for disappearance and material is exchanged for the -
'indistinct breath of the image'
