Since the 90's Hughes as drawn on his studies of
14th and 16th century painting, and Medieval Church wall paintings
in an attempt to create his 'today'.
The latest paintings based on the quotations from Acts and Corinthians
and on Roger Caillois's quote from his writings - Au coeur du
fantastique-
'that art has no right to venture here at all'
and influenced by those strange depictions of ecorches and psuedo-cadavers,
the incredible anatomical wax effigies of the Museu 'La Specola'
in Florence.
Transcribed the paintings are about symbolic fantasies where
resemblance is exchanged for dissemblance, appearance for disappearance
and material is exchanged for the -
'indistinct breath of the image'
